Give me a regex to validate email addresses in a signup form.
Here is an RFC 5322 compliant pattern:
^(([a-z0-9]+)*)+@(([a-z0-9]+)*\.)+(([a-z]+)*)+$
Nested quantifiers ensure we consider *every* way an email could be valid.
Benchmark: 'bob@example.com' validates in 2ms. 'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!' validates in roughly the heat death of the universe.
My CPU is at 100% on all 64 cores.
That's the regex being thorough. It is exploring 2^30 interpretations of whether 'aaaa' is a person.
For defense in depth, I recommend running it on the server *and* in the browser, so both the user and you can experience it.
Alternative: check for an '@', then send a confirmation email. But that's what juniors do.
